Dr. Tom Shea
In 1992, UNC Hospitals recruited Dr. Tom Shea to launch their bone marrow and stem cell transplant programs. Recognizing the needs of his traveling patients, he was one of the team of physicians who were instrumental contributors in the founding of Family House. He also stepped up to serve as part of Family House’s first governing body, serving on the Board from 2006 to 2010 and as President for two of those years. After his Board term expired, Dr. Shea has continued to serve as one of the House’s strongest advocates and stewards, sponsoring annual fundraisers, working on various board committees, and spreading the word about Family House, whether it be to a patient, friend, or colleague. He was also instrumental in initiating the Family House Classic, our annual golf tournament, and a significant yearly fundraiser. Although Dr. Shea retired after 30 years of care for UNC’s Lineberger Cancer patients, he continues to serve them through his ongoing contributions to Family House, not the least of which is sharing his smile with our guests regularly as a member of the East Chapel Hill Rotary meal team.
